Diet-related ill health remains one of the biggest public health challenges facing the UK. The risk of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers is strongly influenced by both dietary quality and patterns, yet the path from nutrition science to practical, scalable solutions for the consumer is often slow and fragmented.
Translational Innovation Hub for Population Health using Food and Nutrition approaches to enhance Positive Physiology
This is exactly the gap that the RIPEN Hub was created to address. RIPEN, TRanslational Innovation Hub for Population HEalth using Food and Nutrition approaches to enhance Positive Physiology, is part of the BBSRC Diet and Health Open Innovation Research Club. Led by Imperial College London, the University of Surrey and PepsiCo, the hub brings together academia, industry and other stakeholders to better understand the relationship between food components and human physiology, and to turn that understanding into real-world innovation and healthier diets.
The RIPEN Innovation Hub – A focus on the interplay between food and physiology
RIPEN’s aim is not just to generate new knowledge, but to create the conditions for translation: partnerships, funding, and development pathways that can move ideas closer to products, interventions and policies with public-health relevance. The hub supports this through three funding streams, Feasibility Awards, Mobility Awards and Progression Awards. These awards are designed to help ideas move from early-stage concept through collaboration and onward toward impact.
What makes RIPEN distinctive is its focus on the interplay between food and physiology. Across its funded portfolio, this means supporting projects that look not only at what people eat, but how foods, ingredients and food structures influence appetite, digestion, gut health, metabolic responses and nutritional status.
What kind of work is funded by the RIPEN Hub?
The projects funded so far show the breadth of that agenda: from salt reduction in bread, to more satiating foods, to gut microbiota, personalised nutrition, fibre, protein digestion and functional foods for specific groups. Much of this work sits at the crucial interface between discovery science and application.
Case Study: Food4PD, validation of a novel functional food designed to meet the nutritional needs of people living with Parkinson’s disease.
A strong example of the kind of work RIPEN enables is Food4PD, a validation study to test a novel functional food designed to meet the nutritional needs of people living with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease globally and is associated not only with motor symptoms, but also with gastrointestinal problems such as constipation. At the same time, emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome and key nutrients may play an important role in disease progression and quality of life. Despite this, nutrition-focused interventions in Parkinson’s have remained relatively underexplored.
Food4PD addressed this challenge through an academic-industry collaboration involving Ulster University, the University of Leeds, the University of Auckland, ABC Nutritionals Ltd and My Moves Matter Ltd. Together, the team developed a bespoke functional drink enriched with chicory inulin, B-vitamins and vitamin D, designed to meet the nutritional needs of people living with Parkinson’s disease. The project then evaluated this product in a randomised controlled trial, to test whether it could help relieve constipation while also improving nutritional status and gut microbiome profiles in people living with Parkinson’s disease.
This is a good illustration of what RIPEN is trying to achieve. The project was not simply about identifying a nutrition problem in theory. It brought together research expertise, industry capability and patient-centred insights to design something practical, targeted and testable. In other words, it translated nutritional science into a product concept with the potential to support a group with clear and often unmet dietary needs. That translational mindset is central to the hub’s mission.
Importantly, the value of Food4PD went beyond the product itself. The project helped strengthen links with the Parkinson’s community, including charities, support groups and people living with the condition, giving the research team a better understanding of the lived experience and helping to ensure that future work stays aligned with real needs. It also generated momentum beyond the initial award: the project team subsequently secured further funding to explore nutrition and neurological disease using AI approaches, and additional support from the OIRC INFORM Hub to assess the wider health and economic potential of prebiotic supplementation in Parkinson’s disease at UK scale.
Ripen projects and Impact: Why it matters
That “beyond the project” impact matters. One of the clearest signs that a hub model is working is when a funded project becomes a springboard: for new collaborations, stronger industry relationships, community engagement, further funding and broader visibility for an under-recognised nutrition issue. Food4PD demonstrates how RIPEN can help create exactly that kind of momentum.
More broadly, RIPEN’s role within the OIRC landscape is to create a space where promising ideas can be tested early, refined collaboratively and developed further. For researchers, this means a route to work more closely with industry and other stakeholders. For businesses and SMEs, it offers access to scientific expertise and a way to co-develop evidence-based innovations. For the wider diet and health community, it creates a pipeline of work that is closer to translation and, ultimately, to public benefit.
As RIPEN continues to grow, its importance lies not only in the individual projects it funds, but in the kind of ecosystem it is building: one that recognises that better diets and better health will depend on collaboration, innovation and a deeper understanding of how foods interact with the body. From personalised nutrition to satiety, gut health and functional foods, RIPEN is helping move nutrition science towards solutions that are not only evidence-based, but usable, relevant and impactful.
And that is why hubs like RIPEN matter. They help bridge the gap between what we know about diet and health, and what we can actually deliver, for people, for communities and for the future of healthier food innovation.
